We Have a New Barn!
Our vision of building a barn to display our collection of mill components, transportation equipment, and farm implements is a reality! Gerald Fowler, owner of Timber Frame Solutions of Thorndike, began the timber frame on July 19 with his crew of Richard Ames and Wally Heath. A Barn Raising work day took place on August 7th with over 25 members of our community applying the siding and loft decking. Donations of food, organized and served by Jane Russo, Barbara LaRoche and Joyce Withee, sustained our energy levels. This spring Shane Hannon and George Sprowl have installed the electrical wiring and lights and the last details will be finished by May 28. A huge thank you to all the volunteers! Searsmont citizens are a remarkable force – full of energy and talent and always willing to help. Our neighbors have contributed supplies and services including site work and gravel, timbers for the frame, siding and roof boards and hayloft floor boards, electrical installation services, building components, labor, and the metal roof! Monetary gifts made in honor of Mel Shure’s 90th birthday bought nearly all the windows for the barn. Our special thanks to Rosey Gerry who has provided entertainment and helped to generate revenue at our auctions and events. The Society has raised the remaining funds needed for construction from generous donations from our membership and beyond. Our gratitude to Jenness Robbins, Barn Committee Chairman, who is responsible for soliciting the majority of our in-kind donations and for his personal contributions. He conducted our barn meetings with his usual efficiency and good humor, and is chiefly responsible for our record-breaking barn construction schedule. In three short months late last summer, the barn was nearly complete! We especially would like to thank our members Ed Dodge and Terrill Wilson for their energy, supervision, and many volunteer hours during construction, building and installing the barn doors and adding finishing details. Ed has accepted the position as our Barn Curator, a job we are confident he will handle with ease and efficiency . We invite you to stop by and take a look. Lunch Break August 7th Volunteer Day.
